Ottawa, October 6, 2011- In the House of Commons on Thursday, October 6, 2011, Parliamentary Secretary for Multiculturalism and Member of Parliament for Willowdale, Chungsen Leung, tabled a document titled A Brief Chronology of Chinese Canadian History: from Segregation to Integration.

“For over 222 years Chinese Canadians helped build this country through their contributions in a variety of areas within civil society such as science, arts, music, academia, community service and many more. This chart wonderfully demonstrates a timeline of these contributions.” He said.

Prepared by the Chinese Canadian Heritage Fund and sponsored in part by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, this document will educate Canadians about the history of Chinese Canadians. The document outlines the history of the Chinese community in Canada from migration, to today, outlining their significant contributions to Canada.

The timeline traces the history of the Chinese Community in Canada; it will be a wonderful learning tool to teach all Canadians about the prominent place held by Chinese Canadians in our nation’s history.

“Our Government, under Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s leadership is proud to have recognized these contributions,” noted Leung. “We have taken many steps in acknowledging the significance of the Chinese community in Canada, including apologizing for the shameful Chinese Head Tax, by providing redress payments and by funding commemoration projects under the Canadian Historical Recognition Program.”
